Welcome to our Web site!
This is the home page of the Windblown Bill Koch Youth Ski Club located in New Ipswich, New Hampshire.  This site is designed to keep both members and others interested youth cross country skiing linked.   Through this site, we communicate information about our club, club events & calendar, race results and other useful ski links.

The Windblown Club is part of the Bill Koch Youth Ski League (BKYSL).  BKYSL offers cross country, ski jumping, and nordic combined programs for boys and girls 13 years old and younger. It is cross country skiing's largest membership group. The league is based on local club participation and involvement. All membership materials and communications will be directed to the local club leader.

The program is named for Olympic Silver medallist Bill Koch. Bill, a native of Vermont, began skiing in the early 70's in a local ski club and was an active nordic combined skier before turning his efforts toward cross country ski racing. In 1976 he shocked the ski world with a silver medal in the 30-kilometer event at the Winter Olympic Games in Seefeld/Innsbruck, Austria. A few years later, he won the World Cup series. He is often credited with starting the "skating revolution" that so dramatically changed cross country skiing in the 1980's.

More than most other sports, X-C skiing offers an enjoyable way for whole families - aged 2-92 - to get outdoors in the wintertime, enjoy nature, get plenty of healthy exercise, and be together doing it. X-C skiing can be peaceful and relaxing, challenging and adventuresome, or strenuous and exhilaratingly fast. You can do it all your life, at any pace you choose. And even in the suburbs, you may be able to do it right out your own back door.

Mission
The mission of the BKYSL is to introduce young people to the lifelong sport of skiing with its recreational, social, fitness and competitive opportunities

The national BKYSL philosophy also includes "competition, skill development and social interaction key elements of any club offering". A major goal is to see more BKYSL graduates continue racing as US licensed competitors.

The club meets on Saturday afternoons from 2 PM until 4 PM, starting in January and ending March.  We meet at Windblown if conditions allow.  We will set up a phone tree to inform families of any changes to our meeting schedule and will post changes here as well.  If there is no snow locally, we will consider meeting at other ski areas further North.

The club is operated by parents and one parent is encouraged to fulfill a club task.  There are lots of tasks for experienced and novice skiers, including coaching, assistant coach (fetching kids out of the snow banks), ski chaperone (come ski with us), assistant race coordinator (can you operate a stop watch?), race photographer (we have the camera), race helpers, etc.  It really is a lot of fun!
